It was the 8th of March of 2017, when stormy weather took away this Natural Wonder. It was one of the most visited attractions on the Maltese islands. The loss of the Azure Window was a worldwide news. The Window was created by natural erosion, and the same natural erosion destroyed it.In the past years, a street in San Lawrence, Gozo was named for the Azure Window – “Triq it-Tieqa tad-Dwejra”. Click on the above to watch the video clip What and where was the Azure Window? The Azure Window The Azure Window, also known as the Dwejra Window, was a natural arch connected to the mainland. This window consisted of a pillar rising from the sea, joined to the mainland by very big horizontal slab. It was made of limestone, which is a very popular sedimentary rock in the Maltese Islands. The Azure Window was in Dwejra, Gozo which is very close to the small village of San Lawrenz. This area of Dwejra has other attractions such as the “Inland Sea” and the “Ġebla tal-Ġeneral” (also know as the “Fungus Rock”. The “Inland Sea” is thought to be sink hole, one of the four sink holes in the area. There are myths that state that plants found on the “Fungus rock” were used as medication. Inland Sea Deterioration of the Window It is estimated, that the cave turned into a Window in the 19th century. As time flew by, the Window continued to grow larger due to stones falling from the arch. It was understandable that one day the Window would collapse, but not so quickly.Studies on the Windows were carried out in the 21st century. It resulted that the Window was stable and that it would survive for more years. However, stones continued to fall from the arch. Signs were put to stop people from going on top of the arch. Also, it was advised that boats should not pass under the arch of this window. It is believed that the Window collapsed around 9.40am of the 8th March 2017. As there are more attractions in the area, Dwejra is still visited by locals and tourists. The Window and media appearance The Azure Window featured in a number of films and series due to its originality. These include Clash of the Titans, The Count of Monte Cristo, Vinnaithaandi Varuvaaya, The Odyssey, Game of Thrones. It was also used for Hugo Boss advert where David Colturi jumps from the Window. Are there other Windows in Gozo? The answer is YES.The most popular is Wield il-Mielah Window (see below). It is located near the small town of Gharb. It became more popular after the collapse of the Azure Window.Another one is the Ghar Qawqla. However, this one collapsed in the mid-20th century. This was located in Marsalforn.
