In 1561 a Flemish poet wrote about a nobleman who played a joke on his servants on April 1. The nobleman sent his servants on foolish errands.

Some historians believe that April Fools’ Day was first celebrated with the introduction of the Gregorian calendar in 1582. In the Hindu calendar the new year began around 1st April. Those who were slow to get the news or did not recognise that the new year moved from 1st April to 1st January were called April Fools. Pranks for these people included having paper fish placed on their backs and being referred to as poisson d’avril.
