Carnival in Malta

The carnival in Malta is one of the most popular cultural events and this goes back to just under five centuries. This has been introduced in Malta in 1535, by Grand Master Piero de Ponte. It is celebrated during the days before Ash Wednesday. Normally it all begins on Friday and ending on Tuesday night.

The carnival includes people dressing in fancy dresses, masked balls, grotesque mask competitions, colourful parade of allegorical floats and marching bands. School events are also organised, where all the kids are dressed up in fancy dresses. The most popular costumes for boys are action heroes whilst for girls are those of princesses.

This year the carnival will take place between Friday 21st February and Tuesday 25th February. Although it is celebrated all over the Maltese islands, the most popular events are held in Valletta (Malta) and Nadur (Gozo). There is also the Għaxaq spontaneous carnival  which is gaining popularity year after year.

Most of the events take place in Valletta on a daily basis. The carnival floats will be situated outside Valletta.
