COVID-19 restrictions ease in Malta

Today, 1st May 2020, the Maltese government announced lifting in the restrictions that were imposed some seven or eight weeks ago. Although COVID-19 restrictions ease is good news, the government still said that precautions should be taken as there was a change in the everyday’s norm. And the virus is still out there in the community. This means that the use of masks will be introduced in some retail outlets and also that the two metres social distancing still needs to be observed.

Which are the changes during the first COVID-19 restrictions ease?

  • A number of non-essential shops will open from Monday. These exclude beauty salons and hairdressers.
  • Some health services that were halted will also be reintroduced
  • Travel to Gozo will resume
  • People gathered together in public can now increase from three to four

Customers must use masks when visiting the hospital, shops and also on public transport. There must also be a limited number of persons in a shop, depending on the area of the shop. Also, changing rooms in shops cannot be used.

Which non-essential shop will open again?

These are the type of shops that will re-open as from next Monday:

  • Furniture outlets
  • Lotto booths
  • Handbag and shoe shops
  • Jewellers
  • Perfumeries
  • Cosmetics shops
  • Clothes shops
  • Home decor
  • Discount shops
  • Toy and hobby shops
  • VRT testing stations
  • Florists.

When will other restrictions be lifted?

Although this depends to the number of cases, if the cases should remain low, other restrictions will be lifted in three weeks time. The first indications show that these might be hairdressers, restaurants, beauty salons, cafeterias etc.

The airport and the sea ports seem to be at the bottom of the list. These are indirectly related to tourism. Ever hotels are dependent on the airport and sea ports.
