Daylight Saving Time – 26th March 2023

It is the time of the year when the clock will go forward one hour. This will happen at 02.00am (CET time or 01.00 GMT), where instantly the time will change to 03.00am (CET or 02.00 GMT). In Britain, this is known as BST which stands for British Summer time. This is also known as Spring Forward, Summer Time and Daylight Savings Time.

For Malta, this will mean seven months of summer time, where the clock will be move again one hour back on 29 October 2023.

Why do we forward the clock one hour?

The primary reason for Daylight Saving Time is to utilize light. We change our tickers (clocks) throughout the mid year months to move an hour of sunlight from the morning to the night. Nations have diverse change dates.

What will happen in the next months and years?

The European Parliament has sponsored a proposition to stop the required one-hour clock change which broadens sunshine hours in summer EU-wide.

The proposition expected states to stop the twice-yearly clock change from 2021, and pick either Daylight Saving Time or winter time.

As of October 2020, the decision has not been confirmed by the Council of the European Union. The Council has asked the Commission to produce a detailed impact assessment, but the Commission considers that the onus is on the Member States to find a common position in Council. As a result, progress on the issue is effectively blocked.
