Feast of Saint George Preca (Ġorġ Preca) 2023

The feast of St. George Preca is celebrated in Swatar, Malta. The actual feast day falls on the 9th day of May. This year it will be a Tuesday.

Saint George Preca (1880-1962) was a Roman Catholic priest from Malta who was known for his holiness, his work as a spiritual director, and for founding the Society of Christian Doctrine, a lay movement dedicated to the religious education of children and adults.

Born in Valletta, Malta, on February 12, 1880, Preca was ordained a priest in 1906. He was a gifted preacher and spiritual director, and he felt called to help people deepen their faith through education. In 1907, he founded the Society of Christian Doctrine, also known as the M.U.S.E.U.M. (Magister Utinam Sequatur Evangelium Universus Mundus), which aimed to promote the Christian education of children and adults.

Preca’s vision was to help people encounter Christ and grow in their relationship with Him through a simple and practical approach to the faith. He believed that all Christians should be active in spreading the Gospel, and he encouraged laypeople to take an active role in the Church.

Saint George Preca was canonized as a saint by Pope Benedict XVI on June 3, 2007. He is known as the “Second Apostle of Malta,” after Saint Paul, who is believed to have brought Christianity to Malta in the first century.
