Halloween in Malta

It has been only in the recent years that Halloween in Malta has begun to form part of the Maltese celebration calendar.. Before that, we were aware of Halloween, and used to follow what other countries do on the data.

What is Halloween?

Halloween is an occasion praised every year on October 31, and Halloween 2019 happens on Thursday, October 31. This tradition began with the old Celtic celebration of Samhain, when individuals would light campfires and wear outfits to avert phantoms. In the eighth century, Pope Gregory III assigned November 1 as an opportunity to respect all holy people. Before long, All Saints Day fused a portion of the customs of Samhain. The prior night was known as All Hallows Eve, and later Halloween. After some time, Halloween advanced into a day of exercises like stunt or-treating, cutting jack-o-lights, happy social events, wearing outfits and eating treats. Although it may sound strange, it has Christian origin

Do we celebrate Halloween in Malta?

Halloween? What is Halloween? This were the questions that you could easily get from elderly people some years ago. However, this new addition to the Maltese calendar is now moving with a very fast pace.

In Malta, Halloween, like any other occasion, is getting a bit commercial. Different parties, for adults or for kids, are being organised. Costumes for such events are being sold – the most popular being witches, skeletons and spiders. Pumpkins are big sold on purpose so families can have their home-made jack-o-lantern. Other decorations such as inflatable ghosts or other items to attach to the windows can easily be bought from shops or supermarkets.

But for children, the cherry on the cake arrives when they go for the door-to-door visits to see if they will get a trick or a treat. It is still not so popular in each town, but it is in Attard and Pembroke.
