Italian football – The history of Coppa Italia

Coppa Italia

The Italian football annual cup is known as the Coppa Italia. The first edition of this cup was held in 1922 and this was won by a team called Vado. Juventus is the most successful team in this cup, followed by Roma. Juventus won the cup 13 times, while Roma won it  9 times. Juventus played a total of 19 finals, while Roma played 17 finals.

The second edition which was scheduled in 1926-27 season had to be cancelled during the round of 32. There was a gap until the third edition which was held in season 1935-36. There was another stop during World War II (season 1942-1943), and it did not resume until 1958. Since then, the Coppa Italia took place every year. The last edition for the season 2019-20 was won by Napoli on 17th June 2020.

Presently, the winner of the Coppa Italia will automatically qualify for the UEFA Europa League , and also the Supercoppa Italiana during the following season.
