Italy – Interesting Facts

Italy is one of the most popular countries in the world. It is popular for various things, like food (e.g. pasta and pizza), interesting places (e.g. Rome and Venice), films (e.g. La Dolce Vita and Life is Beautiful), songs (e.g. Volare and Con te partiro’) and also famous personalities (e.g. Christopher Colombus and Luciano Pavarotti).

Regions in Italy

Italy is subdivided in 20 regions. Five of these regions: Sicily, Trentino-Alto Adige, Sardinia, Aosta Valley and Friuli-Venezia Giulia have special status and a greater degree of independence. This is the list of all the regions:
Abruzzo, Basilicata, Calabria, Campania, Emilia-Romagna, Friuli-Venezia Giulia, Latium (Lazio), Liguria, Lombardia, Marche, Molise, Piemonte, Puglia (Apulia), Sardegna (Sardinia), Sicilia (Sicily), Toscana (Tuscany), Trentino-Alto Adige(Trentino-South Tyrol), Umbria, Valle d’Aosta(Aosta Valley) and Veneto.

  • The colours of the Italian Flag represent three virtues: hope (green), faith (white), and charity (red)
  • Until 1946, Italy was a kingdom
  • Circa 61 million people live in this country
  • The capital of Italy, Rome, was founded in 753BC
  • Before the year 2002 the currency was the Italian Lira. This was replaced by the Euro
  • The nickname of Italy in Italian is Bel Paese which means Beautiful Country
  • 98% of the Italians can read and write
  • Italian is the official language. However, German is also used in some of the Northern regions
  • Italy has boundaries with the following countries: France, Switzerland, Austria and Slovenia.
  • The states of San Marino and Vatican City are within the Italian peninsula.
  • Ice-cream is an Italian invention (Gelato in Italian)
  • There are more than 200 different shapes for Pasta like spaghetti, farfalle, and penne
  • In the year 1860, pizza was invented in Napoli
  • Calzone is a folded pizza
  • The most Italian soccer teams that are followed abroad are: Juventus, Inter, Milan, Napoli and Roma
  • The Italians are sport lovers. The most popular sports are soccer, basketball, cycling, skiing, water polo and Motor racing
  • Italian language derives from the Latin and is a romance language
  • Venice which is popular for carnival, is a lagoon city build on islands
  • There are three active volcanoes: Etna, Vesuvius and Stromboli
  • The longest Italian river is Po
  • Rome is also know as the The Eternal City

  • Leonardo da Vinci was an Italian scientist and artist, mainly known for painting the Mona Lisa
  • Alessandro Volta studied electricity. The unit of electricity, Volt, was named for him
  • Marco Polo explored the East
  • Amerigo Vespucci and Christopher Columbus discovered the Americas
