List of Towns and Cities in the Maltese Islands

The Maltese Islands, mainly Malta, Gozo and Comino, are located in the centre of the Mediterranean Sea. They are just south of Sicily, Italy.In this post you will find the list of towns, list of cities, list of hamlets and the list of other localities. Although the islands are quite small, there are a lot of different and unique locations.

The Maltese Islands are a travel and holiday destination for tourists. Some of the town mentioned below such at Sliema, St. Julians and Bugibba have a good number of hotels. Other locations such as Mdina and Valletta have many top attractions and are visited by a lot of tourists.

List of Cities

There are eleven localities in the Maltese Islands which have been honored with a title of a city. Most of them have been granted the title by a Grand Master of the Knights of St. John.
Until 1530, the first was capital was Mdina (presently nicknamed as the silent city).
Today’s capital city for Malta is Valletta. It is a unique city, full of culture. In 2018 it was branded as the European City of Culture.

List of Towns

There are a number of nice town in Malta and Gozo. Mosta is very popular for its “Dome” which is one of the largest in the world. Marsaxlokk is a very nice and unique fishing village in the south of Malta. Ħad-Dingli has a lot of steep cliffs. Mellieħa is popular was its beaches. San Giljan has a good number of restaurants by the sea. Sliema is very popular with locals and tourists for a nice walk on the seafront promenade.

From most of the northern and western town in Malta, you can watch spectacular sunsets such as the Dingli, Mellieha and San Pawl il-Bahar.

Towns in Gozo

Gozo is much small than Malta. It still boasts of a good percentage of green areas. It is more quiet than Malta and thus it is also known as a place where one can go and relax. The only way to go to Gozo is by sea (either ferry or small boats). In the past there was the air service too (helicopter and sea plane). The towns and villages are small but are extremely nice and quite different from the towns and cities in other countries.

There are also very nice hamlets, which are either zones in the outskirts of the towns or else these are country side areas. The town of Rabat boasts a lot with these green areas such as il-Kuncizzjoni, l-Landrijiet, l-Bahrija etc etc
Others are still “new” localities as they have been developed in the last one hundred years or a bit more like Paceville, Madliena and Swatar.
