Malta: Plan for Economic Regeneration

During the press conference of 8th June 2020 related to the Plan for Economic Regeneration in Malta, the Prime Minister, Minister for Finance and Financial Services and the Minister for Economy, Investment and Small Business. provided details on the recovery package.

  • Cash vouchers of up to €100 for every resident aged 16 years and over. 80% can be spent in hotels, restaurants and bars, while the remaining 20% can be used in retail outlets that were closed during the pandemic. These vouchers will expiry by end of September 2020.
  • The price of petrol and diesel will be reduced by 7 cents per litre.
  • Refund of up to a maximum of €2,000 for wedding expense refunds.
  • Property buyers will have their tax cut from 5% to 1.5%, and sellers will see their tax decrease from 8% to 5%. These will apply on the capital value up to €400,000. The contracts must be signed by the end of March 2021.
  • There will be tax refunds for part of an individual’s income tax.
  • Families who are receiving the in-work benefit will also receive a one-off grant of €250.
  • Wage supplements will also be received by students and elderly who work part time. This will stop after the end of September.
  • Businesses will get a 50% electricity subsidy up to €1,500, for the months of July, August and September.
  • There will also be a rent subsidy for companies , up to a maximum of €2,500.
  • All commercial licences paid to the Malta Tourism Authority and the Commerce Department for 2020 will be waived.
  • There will be financial help for those businesses to re-engineer their model.
  • The government will give refund of 33% of port charges for a period of six months (excluding transhipment activities).
  • A €5 million fund will be used for Maltese companies to advertise their products locally and overseas.
  • The government will create a €3 million fund to help sustain Voluntary organisations.
