The lira was being used since 1972. Thus the lira survived for more than thirty five years.The lira was abbreviated as Lm. meaning Liri maltin (Maltese liri). Since Maltese is a cash based country, there were a lot of Maltese lira notes in circulation. They were used for shopping, for restaurants, practically for everything. There were four different denominations for the bank notes, which were the twenty lira, the ten lira, the five lira, and the two lira. The individual designs on the banknotes included a UN emblem, Melita holding a rudder and mosaic designs, among other things.
