On Saturday 31st August 2019, I did what I normally do on a summer Saturday morning. I want to swim and dive in my favorite local beach which is Għar Lapsi. The day was nice. However, the sea was a bit choppy and there weren’t a lot of people at the beach. In a way, it was better. What happened? When I go to a beach, I always make it a point to take my snorkeling mask with me. So, on the day, I went straight to the sea for a good swim and dive. After a couple of seconds, I noticed something floating. A creature with a yellowish or maybe very light brown color. It moved in a synchronized manner. It was a Fried Egg Jellyfish. I was amazed with my encounter as I never saw something similar. I read about this type of jellyfish, so I was aware of what it can do or not. What is a Fried Egg Jellyfish? This kind of jellyfish is also know with the scientific name of Cotylorhiza tuberculata. It is commonly found in the Mediterranean Sea but not only. Although it can reach a diameter of 40 centimeters, usually it is less than 18 centimeters. Most people always worry that they will be stung by a jellyfish. However, in this case, the sting of this creature has little or no effect on human beings. What did I do? Still amazed by this encounter, and knowing that this creature do not pose any harm to me, I captured a short video of this event. I also checked the area to see if there are more jellyfish of the same family, but I did not manage to see others. Thus, I went back to the original location of this creature so I could admire the beauty of it. I was also amazed by the way that it goes up and down in the water in a fashionable way.
