The name Sydney was given by Arthur Philip who founded Sydney as a British penal colony. The name was chosen in recognition of Thomas Townshend, 1st Viscount Sydney.

The first people to inhabit in this area of Australia were the indigenous Australians. They had migrated from Northern Australia. This occurred around 30,7300 years ago. However, Aboriginal stone tools were discovered in the area. This were dated from 45,000 to 50,000 years BP.
