What is wind? Cyprus Europe Event Information Landscapes London Malta Places Sea Travel USA Weather December 14, 2019November 28, 2021 What is wind? Wind is moving air and is brought about by contrasts in air pressure inside our environment. Air under high atmospheric pressure advances toward territories of low atmospheric pressure. The bigger the difference in between the high and low pressure, the faster the wind will blow. How can we describe the wind? The wind can be described using the speed of the wind and its direction. The direction of the wind is expressed as from the wind is blowing. Example westerly winds are those winds that blow from west to east. When it comes to speed, winds are described in a scale called the Beaufort scale. Example of speed of winds are breeze, storm, hurricane and gale. Types of wind There are four types of wind: Planetary Winds – these are winds that blow thoughout the year in response to latitudinal differences in air pressureTrade Winds – these winds are known as tropical easterlies, and they blow steadily in the same direction. They are noted for consistency in both force and direction. The Westerlies – these winds blow from sub tropical high pressure belts towards sub-polar low pressure belts.Periodic Winds – these wind change direction with the change in season e.g. Monsoons, Land and Sea Breezes, Mountain and Valley Breezes Beaufort scale ForceDescriptionSpeed mph Speedknots Specifications (sea and land)0Calm0-10-1– Sea like a mirror.– Smoke rises vertically. 1Light Air1-31-3– Ripples with appearance of scales are formed, without foam crests. – Direction shown by smoke drift but not by wind vanes. 2Light Breeze4-74-6– Small wavelets still short but more pronounced; crests have a glassy appearance but do not break.– Wind felt on face; leaves rustle; ordinary vanes moved by wind. 3Gentle Breeze8-127-10– Large wavelets. Crests begin to break. Foam of glassy appearance: perhaps scattered white horses. – Leaves and small twigs in constant motion; light flags extended. 4Moderate Breeze13-1811-16– Small waves becoming longer; fairly frequent white horses. – Raises dust and loose paper; small branches moved. 5Fresh Breeze19-2417-21– Moderate waves taking a more pronounced long form; many white horses are formed; chance of some spray. – Small trees in leaf begin to sway; crested wavelets form on inland waters. 6Strong Breeze25-3122-27– Large waves begin to form; the white foam crests are more extensive everywhere; probably some spray.– Large branches in motion; whistling heard in telegraph wires; umbrellas used with difficulty. 7Near Gale32-3828-33– Sea heaps up and white foam from breaking waves begins to be blown in streaks along the direction of the wind; spindrift begins to be seen.– Whole trees in motion; inconvenience felt when walking against the wind. 8Gale39-4634-40– Moderately high waves of greater length; edges of crests break into spindrift; foam is blown in well-marked streaks along the direction of the wind.– Twigs break off trees; generally impedes progress. 9Severe Gale47-5441-47– High waves; dense streaks of foam along the direction of the wind; sea begins to roll; spray affects visibility.– Slight structural damage (chimney pots and slates removed). 10Storm55-6348-55Very high waves with long overhanging crests; resulting foam in great patches is blown in dense white streaks along the direction of the wind; on the whole the surface of the sea takes on a white appearance; rolling of the sea. becomes heavy; visibility affected – Seldom experienced inland; trees uprooted; considerable structural damage. 11Violent Storm64-7256-63– Exceptionally high waves; small- and medium-sized ships might be for a long time lost to view behind the waves; sea is covered with long white patches of foam; everywhere the edges of the wave crests are blown into foam; visibility affected. – Very rarely experienced; accompanied by widespread damage. 12Hurricane72-8364.71– The air is filled with foam and spray; sea is completely white with driving spray; visibility very seriously affected – Very rarely experienced; accompanied by widespread damage.
