Xlendi

Not sure if you heard of Malta, and not sure if you heard of Gozo; moreover not sure if you ever heard of Xlendi.
Xlendi is a very small town which is situated in the south west of the island of Gozo. It is located at the bottom of a valley. The nearest towns are Fontana, Munxar and Kercem.
This town can be easily reached by bus or by cars. You just need to follow the signs.

Interesting information

In the past, Xlendi was a small fishing town. Some say that this location got its name from the word “xelandion” which was a Byzantine boat. It might be that this boat frequented Xlendi Bay.
There is a tower overlooking the port that was built in the 17th Century. This was built by Grandmaster Lascaris. During the British times, this tower was the only defensive building in the area.

Interesting landmarks

Apart of the Xlendi there are other interesting landmarks.
Punic Tombs – these tombs go back to the Punic-Byzantine times. Xlendi was very popular with the Romans.
Underground Emergency Mill – Few people known about it. This was built (excavated into the cliffs) in 1955. This mill was never used and it is nuclear safe. In its silo, one can store 1000 tonnes of wheat.
Chapels
– Although the town is very small, with some 20 roads, during the 17th century there were 4 chapels in this town. Today there is a church dedicated to Our Lady of Mount Carmel.
